Aceology - Assumptions (prod. MadBliss)

Aceology is back and in rare form on "Assumptions" backed by some nice production provided by MadBliss for the first single from his upcoming Karma EP. AceGawd has been on a hiatus for about a year now, just dropping tracks here and there but with this he seems to be finally ready to release a new project.

On his latest track he addresses his hiatus, those speaking on him and even brings up the critiques of his style. Speaking of his style it is funny how he brought it up seeing as for the last year or so he has had a "trap" influenced sound (see this and this) and many of his fans were asking if he was ever going to return to his more traditional/jazz influenced sound (see this and this) that he had earlier in his career. It is how he says in the track though "gotta switch it up, no problem versatile and focused" he can do both equally well and because of that I don't have a preference but it is nice to hear him on this style mainly because it's been so long. I have to say it seems like the homie always sends me quality music and this is definitely one of the strongest singles he has put out from the lyrics to the mixing of the track everything works. Hopefully his Karma EP will be out sooner rather than later I'm interested in hearing what Ace has cooked up until then I'll have this on repeat.

High Class Filth - Filth Y Moi II

It's been a year since I've had High Class Filth on the site, mostly due to me and my loafing, the homie has definitely been busy. After dropping the excellent Perfect Nudes Forever back in May, Filth kept busying by releasing a few tracks in between the months and landing his first album placement on A$AP Ferg's Trap Lord co-producing the track "Cocaine Castle" along with Subdaio, you can say 2013 was a good year for the young producer. Filth looks to build upon that success and start the New Year off strong with the follow up to last years Filth Y Moi.

On FYM II it's pretty much the same formula as the last, however after using Toro's first two albums Causers of This and Underneath The Pine, this time around Filth mainly uses tracks from Chad's latest Anything In Return. Which is a pretty big task in itself seeing how that album gained a lot critical acclaim and ended up in the Top 5 of most Album of The Year lists. If anything it shows just how much confidence Filth has in himself and his abilities.

As I stated earlier most of the material is taken from 2013's Anything In Return the tracks being "Cake" "Rose Quartz" "Harm in Change" "Grown Up Calls" and "Never Matter" leaving "Talamek" as the sole song sampled that's not from the album. I must say I hold this album in high regard and Filth did every track justice, especially "Rose Quartz" which is my favorite. I was both hoping and worried that Filth would pick that one to sample but he definitely killed it. After seeing what he was able to accomplish last year I'm excited to see what 2014 has in store for Filth. I know one thing that I can always expect when it come to him and that is great music, for me as a fan, that's more than enough.

Aceology - Movin' Out (Prod. MY$TIKAL)

Aceology becomes AceGawd and channels his inner Thug on his latest track "Movin' Out". Backed by some menacing production from MY$TIKAL, Ace absolutely goes in over the bass heavy instrumentation sending shots and calling out all foes. I don't know who pissed Ace off but ever since "OGAWD" dude has been deadly. GAWDBLE$$ coming soon...

Surp - Truth is blisss

Surp dropped this joint a few days ago and in typical fashion he absolutely goes off. I've ran out of adjectives/ways to describe this dude. I'm honestly going to start writing just "Listen" when it comes to a Surp track. No words needed other than that.

Aceology - ZEUS 2.1 Beta (prod. KINGNEV$UPREME)

Ace Gawd is back with his latest track "ZEUS", backed by ill production from KINGNEV$UPREME, this might be the best yet that I've heard from him lyrically. This is from the potentially upcoming Trillzburry Dopeboy EP, Ace does promise that the final version will be mastered for a much cleaner sound. Be sure to grab Ace's latest projects B$ RADIOVol.II/TOA$T TO THA GOD$ and PVLMTREE$ & PROMETHVZINE VOL.1.

[EP] Surp - God .

The enigmatic wordspitter known as Surp is back with his latest work God ., keeping up with his tradition of being non-traditional, the project is half instrumental with the other half being actual rap tracks. Most artist couldn't do this, most wouldn't do this but Surp isn't like most. As always Surp impresses lyrically but what is most impressive about the project is the atmosphere that it gives off. The otherworldly ambience is created through a combination of the odd instrumentals, lyrics and the voice clips featured on the project. I can guarantee that you haven't heard anything thing like this so far this year, it definitely holds the title of most unique project of 2013.

Aceology - Ratchet & Clank / MK III

Trill Game General Aceology is back with another banger in "Ratchet & Clank/ MK III" which is reminiscent to his first D:D feature "Chinchilla Warfare". I definitely get that early SGP Blvckland Radio 66.6 vibe with the gritty/distorted vocals and the Mortal Kombat sample, although Ace has a more raw sound with this track. Homie has a knack for creating these trill joints with familiar elements but still putting enough spin on it to create his own unique wave. Look for Trxllxcxsm 2 to drop sometime later this year.

Sidenote: I need more video game samples in music!

High Class Filth - Filth Y Moi

I don't know much about High Class Filth other than that he is in Backwards Society (see: Aceology & Surp) and I haven't heard much from him besides a few tracks he has produced for some of the DMV fam. However, I have liked the few joints that I've heard and Filth Y Moi is no different, featuring only Toro Y Moi samples as the title would suggest, this is a short but strong example of HCF's skills. As I always state, it takes a lot for me to post a instrumental project but this is definitely worth it. Start off your New Year with a little something different and check out Filth Y Moi. [Album] Surp - for the LOVE of SOUND

Just as with the actual cover to the project, the artist known as Surp is shrouded in mystery. All I know about him is that he has a habit of dropping songs/projects seemingly out of nowhere, he is the SoundCloud God, he raps very well, he is from New York and is in a group called Backwards Society. Surp's for the LOVE of SOUND originally had a release date of October 31st, however it was delayed for whatever reason and than Surp decided to drop it randomly with no warning on November 21st. I was pleasantly surprised to say the least and immediately downloaded the project and listened.

Right off the album starts off in a weird way with "Start ." an instrumental that seems like it would sound more at home on his Blunted Renditions series, needless to say I just chalked it up to typical Surp-ism (new word) and left it at that. What happens over the next 15 tracks is superb lyricism and other worldly metaphors. Aside from "Hello ." which is essentially "Start .", I won't pretend to know why Surp started and ended the album with such odd instrumentation but I won't knock it either. Surp is what underground Hip-Hop is at it's finest. The project features no hooks, and yet you don't seem to notice or mind. Curren$y is another artist, who can do this and still have me invested in the track oddly enough.

Although every track is dope and for the most part I enjoyed the majority of for the LOVE of SOUND, there are a few tracks which stood out from the rest and I want to give a little shine to those. First off "Prawllum", the track that caught my attention and made me a fan of Surp in the first place. Also, a perfect example of why I think so highly of his lyricism, just a flat out verbal assault of lyricism in the best form. Next is "Bad Character ." which features Surp spitting over a Madlib joint and effortlessly dropping bars, almost as if was freestyled. "MellSURP" is the collaboration between rMell and Surp and stands out due mainly to the former's production and the later laces it and doesn't let the beat outshine him."Hot Hawaiian Punch ." and "Bullshit" both stand out for the same reasons. Lastly, "This is for you ." which is amazing for the simple fact that Surp states his parents were arguing while he was recording it. Now that may not seem like much but for the song to have such a peaceful vibe and for it to have be recorded while something opposite of that was happening and for Surp to be able to maintain the vibe throughout the song made it stand out to me.

To wrap this up, and I promise this isn't a review (Surp don't be mad) just an analyzation. for the LOVE of SOUND is one of the illest projects this year and for some strange reason I feel like Surp wasn't even trying to accomplish that. From my perspective he seems to genuinely enjoy making music and doesn't to much care for the attention that comes with it, as talented as he is. "I could be wrong, even though I maybe be right" (kudos if you know where that's from) but oh well. Nothing else to say other than listen and be sure to keep Surp on your radar for the next couple of years. I think homie is gonna do some big things.

Aceology - Chinchilla Warfare (prod. Logan Da Great)

Backwards $ocitey's own Aceology dropped an absolute banger in "Chinchilla Warfare" producer Logan Da Great comes with the bass, which knocks so hard that it actually distorts Ace's vocals. Although I'm sure it was intentional, so don't mistake it for low quality or bad mixing. Look for more tracks like this on Aceology's upcoming project Red EyePoetry when it drops November 4th.
